Volar en Marte es difícil, ya que solo tiene el 0,7% de la densidad de la atmósfera terrestre, lo que sería equivalente a una altura de 30 km aquí en la tierra. Semejante vuelo, en nuestro planeta, solo está reservado para vehículos experimentales (o cohetes, ya que estamos).
Si un helicóptero quiere elevarse en la débil atmósfera marciana debe poder compensar la débil sustentación generada ¿Cómo? Pues, aparte de ser lo más ligero posible, básicamente aumentando el tamaño de las palas del rotor y/o girando más rápido.
En el caso de Ingenuity, se decidió emplear ambas soluciones, por un lado las palas del rotor tienen un diámetro de 1,2 metros (bastante grandes para el tamaño y masa del dron) y giran cinco veces más rápido de lo que haría un helicóptero terrestre.
Pero, si algo ha llamado la atención del público es la presencia de ‘dos’ rotores, uno encima del otro. Esta configuración se conoce como rotores coaxiales contrarrotativos y permite que el momento angular de ambos rotores se anulen, eliminado la necesidad de añadir un rotor de cola. Éste diseño es similar al utilizado en los helicópteros Kamov rusos, que se destacan por su alta maniobrabilidad y sus reducidas dimensiones, cualidades que son muy apreciadas en un vehículo volador marciano.
Sin embargo, para este primer vuelo debemos armarnos de paciencia ya que el mismo no tendrá lugar, como muy pronto, hasta dentro de dos meses.
