Las areniscas del Grupo Asunción (Cretácico Superior – Terciario Inferior, señaladas en color rojo en el mapa) se despliegan en desencaje entre sí a ambas orillas del río, lo cual señala un importante transporte tectónico lateral en sentido casi Este – Oeste.
Es muy probable, que Villa Hayes y Piquete Cué hayan constituido un único macizo terrestre en otro tiempo geológico y que derivaron horizontalmente por desplazamiento tectónico.

La fractura en el río Paraguay es conjugada con la falla Piquete Cué, el cual se alinea al valle de Ypacaraí y que corresponde al esquema estructural del rift de Asunción.
En ese punto de unión de fracturas se encuentra el islote «El Peñón», que ha resistido a los procesos erosivos del río Paraguay por su constitución silicificada en algunos niveles, aunque no necesariamente este haya sido su modelador principal.

A orillas del río Paraguay, frente a El Peñón se han identificado areniscas micáceas que tienen todo el aspecto de pertenecer al Grupo Itacurubí, manifiestas en forma de faja a lo largo de la falla Piquete Cué y con el mismo comportamiento estructural que las demás que se encuentran hacia el sureste, como ser Vargas Peña, Caacupé mí, etc.
Areniscas columnares han sido reconocidas en Villa Hayes y Piquete Cué, siempre en asociación con cuerpos ígneos del Terciario del tipo nefelinitas y en líneas de fracturas.
