El último viaje

A lo largo de varias vidas humanas la enorme nave espacial había estado navegando por los senderos innombrados del universo, sola y en completo silencio. En ella, los viajeros interestelares contemplan una visión largamente anticipada: un planeta poco familiar envuelto en nubes, orbitando una estrella enana y roja, conocida por los astrónomos terrestres como Gliesse 876 a unos quince años luz de distancia de la tierra.

A principios del siglo XXI los telescopios del satélite terrestre informaron que el cuarto planeta del sistema Gliesse 876 se ubicaba a la distancia correcta de su estrella como para permitir la existencia de vida o por lo menos una colonia humana auto sostenida.

Los últimos perfeccionamientos de los cohetes de fusión por pulsos permitían viajar a una fracción significativa de la velocidad de la luz posibilitando alcanzar los sistemas estelares vecinos en el razonable plazo de unos dos siglos.

Inevitablemente el viejo nomadismo de la especie se afirmó. Unos diez mil pasajeros abordaron la gigantesca arca interestelar con el objetivo de buscar un nuevo hogar para la humanidad. Llenos de esperanza fueron en busca de cumplir su destino a la luz de un nuevo sol.

Después de abandonar la órbita de su planeta natal utilizaron la gravedad del sol para conseguir impulso extra, con el fin de ahorrar el preciado combustible para el largo viaje que les esperaba. Tras superar el cinturón de asteroides y luego de dos asistencias gravitatorias en Júpiter y Saturno la nave había alcanzado los cien kilómetros por segundo en una sola semana.

Sólo al superar la orbita de Plutón, el capitán de la nave ordena mantener impulso sostenido, llevando a la misma a alcanzar su velocidad prevista; de una décima parte de la velocidad de la luz, manteniendo la misma durante el siguiente siglo y medio, sólo desacelerando en la ultima década del viaje gracias a su micro delgada vela de Boro.

Abordo, la vida sigue tan normal como es posible. La nave gira sobre sí misma proporcionando gravedad artificial. Los granjeros hidropónicos cuidan los densos campos de alubias y arroz, tienen universidad, un centro comercial y hasta un club social, por decir algunas de las comodidades que hacen la vida más llevadera.

Los viajeros mas ancianos murieron y los niños nacidos durante la travesía han crecido los suficiente.

Solamente los ingenieros en telecomunicaciones que reciben noticias cada vez más antiguas de la tierra y la tripulación del puente eran concientes que el viaje tuvo un inicio y tendría un final. Un grupo de exploradores se apresta a utilizar el avión aeroespacial almacenado en la bodega de carga.

Mientras esta odisea espacial se acerca a su clímax: ¿habrán hecho el viaje para nada?
